The Breakdown: Circus Devils (Robert Pollard), Heaven & Hell, Liars, Queensryche

August 29th, 2007 by admin

First priorities this week aren't really about music, for once. No, this week the priority is getting the hell out of Phoenix in exchange for a weekend of zoo, sea life, and the beach in Phoenicians' second home, San Diego. Regardless, there is no doubt that at least a couple of the following discs will be accompanying my I-Pod on the trip:

Circus Devils - Sgt. Disco: Yeah, it's yet another Robert Pollard project - 32 more weird, rough little snippets of songs.

Tough times for New Orleans musicians (AP)

August 27th, 2007 by admin

“It ain’t easy to be in the Big Easy,” Deacon John Moore, the president of the local musicians union, told onlookers after the low-key march through the rain from Louis Armstrong Park. “Our musicians are suffering. We hate to come out here and beg, but we have no alternative at this point.”

Many musicians, like other New Orleanians, are struggling with life since Hurricane Katrina struck nearly two years ago.

Interview: Band Of The Week - Yoshi image
I once had an author friend tell me that when people find out you have written a book, you suddenly discover that everyone is writing a book. And it gets worse; they want to tell you all about it, in excruciating detail. I can tell you the same applies to being a music writer.

Music Review: Indie Round-Up - Irion, Robustelli, Americana Compilation, Wells

August 26th, 2007 by admin

I get a lot of CDs to review. Many, many CDs.

I mean, really, really a lot of CDs. Piles and piles. Rafts of them. Oodles. Myriads. Hosts.

Did I mention that I get a lot of CDs to review? Well, I do - a lot more than I could possibly give a careful listen to, much less write about. Yet I like to give everything a chance. What to do?

Like many people who work for a living, I have certain tasks that require total concentration, and others whose tedium is ameliorated by background music.
