Interview: Raphael Saadiq - Singer, Songwriter and Producer

Interview: Raphael Saadiq - Singer, Songwriter and Producer image
With all things considered, Raphael Saadiq is the thread that has weaved the fabric of contemporary soul music together. His midas touch has turned the careers of countless "soul sisters"—Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige—and "soul brothers"—John Legend, Musiq Soulchild and D'Angelo—into gold. And while his artistic resume is largely unknown by the masses, such high-profile collaborations expose a mere fraction of Saadiq's musical contributions.

Tobacco - Fucked Up Friends

Tobacco - Fucked Up Friends image
Tobacco’s Tom Fec just made one of the year’s best stoner-rock records — only it’s powered by synths, hip-hop beats and vocoders instead of guitars. Moonlighting from his electronic psych-rock band Black Moth Super Rainbow, Fec crafts spectacular, Air-style instrumentals (”Pink Goo”) and expertly spins reedy Mellotrons into indelible hooks (”Hawker Boat”). Bonus points for lyrics that get lost in pot-smoke profundity: “Honey Bunches of Oat

Music Review: Darkthrone - Dark Thrones and Black Flags

November 26th, 2008 by admin

The Darkthrone of today are a completely different band than when they started out and redefined the genre of black metal in the early '90s.

The strict doctrines of old have long since been left behind, but only out of a natural progression. Darkthrone sound like they do today very simply because their songwriting has evolved. They want to honor true old school music and pay homage to their influences, such as speed metal, “a little bit boring thrash”, as Fenriz would put it, and punk.

Music Review: Beyonce - I Am… Sasha Fierce [Deluxe Edition]

November 26th, 2008 by admin

For all of the images introduced in various aliases or alter egos in the rock ‘n’ roll era — from David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust to Chan Marshall as Cat Power — what has ultimately mattered most is not so much a name as the quality of the music such personas represent.

As for Beyonce, who on her latest album assumes the fictitious role of Sasha Fierce — a name she’s long ascribed to her onstage semblance — she demonstrates how giving a character a voice has, in turn, enabled her to reveal far more of her own.

International News: The Killers defend 'Human' error image
If you plan on singing along to The Killers at V Festival 2009, frontman Brandon Flowers wants to make sure you get the words right. He has responded to confusion over the chorus of the band’s new single Human, in which he sings, “Are we human, or are we dancer?” As your year three schoolteacher will tell you, that last word should be a plural – which has led people to think the lyric is in fact “denser”.

Keeping Up With Yngwie Malmsteen

November 23rd, 2008 by admin

For close to 25 years now, Swedish-born legend Yngwie Malmsteen has awed audiences worldwide with his groundbreaking brand of classical-style heavy metal and distinct approach to guitar playing. Whether it be slick, sweeping arpeggio riffs or lightning-quick shredding (which at times hard rock critics thought was a little overdone at the expense of stronger songwriting), Malmsteen has nonetheless earned irrevocable praise in the world of all things metal and electric guitar.
